Subject Rationale
At Stanbury Village School, our Art and Design curriculum is designed to inspire and develop our pupils' confidence to experiment, invent, and express their ideas and thoughts about the world through creative means. Informed by the expertise of subject specialists, our curriculum aligns with the National Curriculum and the National Society for Education in Art and Design's progression competencies, ensuring our pupils have every opportunity to develop their artistic abilities, nurture their talents and interests, and learn about art and artists across cultures and throughout history.
Our curriculum, based on the Kapow Primary scheme of work, is sequentially structured to allow pupils to build their skills and knowledge over time, applying them to a range of creative outcomes. The formal elements of art, a key component of the National Curriculum, are woven throughout the units, with key skills revisited with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This ensures that pupils develop a secure, long-term understanding of essential artistic knowledge and techniques.
Creativity and independent decision-making are robustly embedded within our Art and Design curriculum, supporting pupils in learning how to make their own creative choices and produce unique, personal outcomes that are knowledge-rich. The practical, experimental, and exploratory nature of the lessons, complemented by the use of sketchbooks to document ideas, encourages our pupils to engage actively with the subject and develop their artistic talents.
Recognising that some teachers may lack confidence in their own artistic abilities, the Kapow Primary scheme provides comprehensive support, including subject-specialist-led pupil videos, multiple teacher videos to develop subject knowledge, and differentiated guidance to ensure all pupils can access and enjoy the lessons. This ensures the delivery of high-quality Art and Design education that promotes progression and achievement for all of our pupils.
